Who I Am.
I graduated from UNC Law School in 2011. I worked as an Assistant Public Defender in Greensboro from 2011 to 2013, and as an Assistant Public Defender in Durham from 2013 to 2017. In 2017, I left the Public Defender’s Office to start my own law firm so that I could accept the wrongful conviction case of Timothy Britt. Mr. Britt’s convictions were reversed and he was released from prison in 2017. I now dedicate a significant portion of my practice to post-conviction work, fighting for those wrongfully convicted to be released from prison.
I also accept court-appointed murder cases through the Office of the Capital Defender. Since 2017, often through litigation of pretrial motions addressing suppression and discovery issues, eight of my clients charged with murder have had their cases dismissed.
I represent people throughout North Carolina on serious felony charges at the trial and post-conviction levels. I wish I could say I fight for justice. Sometimes I get to do that. But if you have spent decades in prison for crimes you did not commit, you know that for you there sadly is no such thing as justice.
I fight for my clients’ equality, freedom and protection while fighting against police and prosecutorial misconduct and the systemic racism upon which our justice system was built. My sincere hope is that someday this work will no longer be necessary.
